There was amongst those before you a man who had a wound. He was in [such] anguish that he took a knife and made with it a cut in his hand, and the blood did not cease to flow till he died. Allah the Almighty said:

‘My servant has himself forestalled Me; I have forbidden him Paradise.’

It was related by al-Bukhari.

Then the Prophet recited the Holy Quran's verses: 'Let not those who withhold . . .' (to the end of the verse 3.180)

“A man from among those who were before you was called to account. Nothing in the way of good was found for him except that he used to have dealings with people and, being well-to-do, he would order his servants to let off the man in straitened circumstances [from repaying his debt].”

He (the Prophet - peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that Allah said:

“We are worthier than you of that (of being so generous). Let him off.”

It was related by Muslim (also by al-Bukhari and an-Nasa’i).

The bedouin said, "By Him in Whose Hands my life is, I will not do more than this."

When he (the Bedouin) left, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah swt be upon him) said, "Whoever likes to see a man of Paradise, then he may look at this man."

A man said: ‘By Allah, Allah will not forgive So-and-so.’ At this Allah the Almighty said: ‘Who is he who swears by Me that I will not forgive So-and-so? Verily I have forgiven So-and-so and have nullified your [own good] deeds (1) (or as he said [it]).’

(1) A similar Hadith, which is given by Abu Dawud, indicates that the person referred to was a godly man whose previous good deeds were brought to naught through presuming to declare that Allah would not forgive someone’s bad deeds.

I was with the Messenger of Allah (may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and there came to him two men: one of them was complaining of penury (being very poor), while the other was complaining of brigandry (robbery). The Messenger of Allah (may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “As for brigandry, it will be but a short time before a caravan will [be able to] go out of Mecca without a guard. As for penury, the Hour (Day of Judgement) will not arrive before one of you takes his charity around without finding anyone to accept it from him. Then one of you will surely stand before Allah, there being no screen between Him and him, nor an interpreter to translate for him. Then He will say to him: Did I not bring you wealth? And he will say: Yes. Then He will say: Did I not send to you a messenger? And he will say: Yes. And he will look to his right and will see nothing but Hell-fire, then he will look to his left and will see nothing but Hell-fire, so let each of you protect himself against Hell-fire, be it with even half a date - and if he finds it not, then with a kind word.”

Then Abu Huraira recited the holy verses: "The pure Allah's Islamic nature (true faith of Islam) (i.e. worshipping none but Allah) with which He has created human beings. No change let there be in the religion of Allah (i.e. joining none in worship with Allah). That is the straight religion (Islam) but most of men know, not." (30.30)

[Message for us in hadith: When one returns from a journey and sees one’s town suburbs, he should start reciting the invocation mentioned in this hadith till he enters the city. These phrases express gratitude to Allah Subhanah wa Ta'ala for the safe return to one's hometown; they also express repentance, obedience and determination to worship Allah.]

Such was the importance given by the Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings of Allah swt be upon him) to the settling of the debts (if any) of a deceased companion, that he (may peace and blessings of Allah swt be upon him) used to refuse to offer the funeral prayer and seek forgiveness for the deceased, until someone paid off his/her debts.]

The one coming next is like one offering a cow and then a ram and then a chicken and then an egg respectively. When the Imam comes out (for Jumua prayer) they (i.e. angels) fold their papers and listen to the Khutba.

Verily, Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His slave than a person who has lost his camel in a waterless desert carrying his provision of food and drink. He, having lost all hopes (to get his camel and provisions back), lies down in shade and is disappointed about his (lost) camel; when all of a sudden he finds that camel standing before him. He takes hold of its reins and then out of boundless joy blurts out: 'O Allah, You are my slave and I am Your lord. He commits this mistake out of extreme joy.’

Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman asked A'isha, the wife of the Prophet (may Allah swt please with her), what the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was like during Ramadan. She said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did not go above eleven rakas in Ramadan or at any other time. He prayed four - do not ask me about their beauty or length. Then he prayed another four - do not ask me about their beauty and length. Then he prayed three."

A'isha continued, "I said, 'Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), are you sleeping before you do the witr?' He said, A'isha, my eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep.' "

If someone fears that he will sleep through till the morning, let him pray the witr before he sleeps, and if some one hopes to wake for the last part of the night, let him delay his witr.

Narrated 'Aisha (the mother of the faithful believers - may Allah swt please with her):

Al-Harith bin Hisham asked Allah's Apostle (peace and blessings of Allah swt be upon him) "O Allah's Apostle! How is the Divine Inspiration revealed to you?" Allah's Apostle (peace and blessings of Allah swt be upon him) replied, "Sometimes it is (revealed) like the ringing of a bell, this form of Inspiration is the hardest of all and then this state passes off after I have grasped what is inspired. Sometimes the Angel comes in the form of a man and talks to me and I grasp whatever he says."

Aisha (may Allah swt please with her) added: Verily I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah swt be upon him) being inspired Divinely on a very cold day and noticed the sweat dropping from his forehead (as the Inspiration was over).

Allah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) was ordered (by Allah) to prostrate on seven parts and not to tuck up the clothes or hair (while praying). Those parts are: the forehead (along with the tip of nose), both hands, both knees, and (toes of) both feet.

One day we were praying behind Allah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam). When he raised his head from bowing, he said, "Sami'a-l- lahuLiman hamida." A man behind him said, "Rabbana walaka-l hamd hamdan Kathiran taiyiban mubarakan fihi" (O our Lord! All the praises are for You, many good and blessed praises). When the Prophet completed the prayer, he asked, "Who has said these words?" The man replied, "I." The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said, "I saw over thirty angels competing to write it first." Prophet rose (from bowing) and stood straight till all the vertebrae of his spinal column came to a natural position.

Similarly, a believer is afflicted with calamities (but he remains patient till Allah removes his difficulties.) And an impious wicked person is like a pine tree which keeps hard and straight till Allah cuts (breaks) it down when He wishes."

Allah's Apostle (peace and blessings of Allah swt be upon him) was praying and he was carrying Umama the daughters of Zainab, the daughter of Allah's Apostle (peace and blessings of Allah swt be upon him) and she was the daughter of 'As bin Rabi'a bin 'AbduShams. When he (the prophet) prostrated, he put her down and when he stood, he carried her (on his neck).

While Allah's Apostle was sitting in the mosque (with some people) three men came, two of them came in front of Allah's Apostle and the third one went away, and then one of them found a place in the circle and sat there while the second man sat behind the gathering, and the third one went away. When Allah's Apostle finished his preaching, he said, "Shall I tell you about these three persons? One of them betook himself to Allah and so Allah accepted him and accommodated him; the second felt shy before Allah so Allah did the same for him and sheltered him in His Mercy (and did not punish him), while the third turned his face from Allah, and went away, so Allah turned His face from him likewise.
